The Zune is great, but early on there seems to be little help in getting your video files to play on your zune for free. I haven't seen many zunecast yet, and the zune software as far as we can tell has no way of subscribing to videocast's or netcast's. Zune will convert .m4v files (podcast) for you, so for now I am relying on someone else's iTunes for subscriptions and then simply copying them over to my folders.

However, I haven't seen any free software or tools for converting other video files. There are a few that convert files for you making the process thoughtless. But at a price. The ones zune.net are offering are $20 - $30.

There is a technical, but free way to convert the other video files (.avi and .mpeg) to a Zune format (.wmv). And it's from Microsoft. Below are 5 steps to converting video to Zune.

1) Get Free Software

Download free software Windows Media Encoder, Install software and start the program by going to <Start><All Programs> and <Windows Media>

2) Start a New Session

If this is a new install the 'New Session' should automatically appear. If it does not, click on <New Session> in the upper left hand corner of the program.

Click on <Custom Session>

3) Input File Source and Output Locations

On the 'Sources' tab and under 'Source from' click on <File> and then the <Browse> button to choose video(s) to be converted.

Once files are choosen, click <Apply> at the bottom.
